Spotlight on Spice: Homemade Vanilla Extract
With Halloween just around the corner, we are all of course thinking about…Christmas?
Can you believe it, summer just ended and we are only two months from the big day. Plenty of time to get your Christmas shopping done.
But if you want to give something special – something homemade – put down that pumpkin carving knife and that one pound bag of mixed Halloween candy, and pick up a bottle of vodka!
Because you will need to start right now to make sure your homemade vanilla extract gifts are ready by Christmas time (the vanilla beans will need to steep for a minimum of 6-8 weeks in unflavored vodka).
Learn more at The Italian Dish, as Elaine from Michigan shows you the easy steps to make your own vanilla extract. And explains why the Vanilla Bean is the gift that keeps on giving…

This is a great idea! I have a bag of vanilla pods from our farm so I will make this today :)
Yeah, it's a shame that in food blogging the older posts get buried so quickly. Elaine really came up with a great holiday gift idea that we wanted to bring attention to again.
Adorable cute bolltes :)
That is so fabulous!! I would have loved to have made some in time for the holdiays! But will be ready for 2012! Thanks for posting. Beautiful job on the labels too!

Love your bottles! I did some vanilla after looking at your page for Christmas this year. I advised the people to let the vanilla beans continue to steep until the date on the bottle! Never too late to make vanilla. Happy Holidays!!
That's a great idea with the date on the bottle. It is definitely not too late to make them for gifts this Christmas. Thanks, and Happy Holidays!
Hi! Can you suggest any places to buy vanilla beans or glass bottles in bulk? Love this idea by the way :)
