Spotlight on Spice: Cook & Share a Pot of Curry (and Win a Spicy Parcel)

Tropical Spice Garden spice masala gift with garam masala, biryani masala, korma, chinese 5 spice in penang, malaysia
Win a parcel containing 4 packets of aromatic curry powder - Garam Masala, Biryani Masala, Korma, & Chinese 5 Spice.

On Season with Spice, we have always advocated an appreciation for cuisines all over the world, by featuring people who introduce their culture; their home; through their kitchen, by sharing colorful recipes…with spice.

That is why we were troubled when we read a story about a family that had immigrated to Singapore and complained to the authorities how repulsed they were by the smell of curry from their neighbor’s house. Eventually, an official mediator had to step in and it was agreed that the Singaporean-Indian family would only be allowed to cook curry when the foreign family was not at home. [Details from The Telegraph

Curry is one of the traditional dishes of multicultural Singapore. Whether Chinese or Indian, Nyonya or Malay, curry can be found in kitchens throughout the island. It is baffling that someone who just moved to the country would feel they have the right to prevent a local from cooking traditional food.

But while we are disappointed by this incident, we are also heartened after over 50,000 Singaporeans and other supporters, have pledged to ‘Cook and Share a Pot of Curry!’ on Sunday, August 21. We hope this event spreads all over the globe as a day to cook a traditional dish from your homeland, and share it with a neighbor from another culture. An event to encourage home cooking, tradition, and cross-cultural connections.

Recipes for Cook and Share a Pot of Curry Singapore August 21 2011
We are proud supporters of 'Cook and Share a Pot of Curry!'. Therefore, on Season with Spice, we will be featuring only curry recipes on our homepage from now through August 21, so if you would like to join the event this Sunday, you will have many curry recipes to choose from.

And to convince you to keep cooking with spices, and cooking curry, we have three spicy giveaways...

Enter to win one of three beautifully packaged Spice Masala Parcels, to cook for yourself, or to share with your new neighbor who has never tried curry before.

Sponsored by the following:

To enter, just leave a comment below (or on the SwS Facebook page), telling us which one of the curry recipes featured on pages 1 or 2 of the homepage of Season with Spice you would most like to try.  Easy as that.

Contest rules:
  • Entry is free
  • Only comments posted before midnight, Friday, August 26, will be entered (Singapore time)
  • To qualify, you can be anywhere in the world, but you must provide a Singapore or Malaysia mailing address (a family or friend's address is fine)
  • Three winners will be selected on Saturday, August 27, using www.random.org, and notified on the same day.
Good luck!

[WINNERS - #28, #50, #60 - Honey M, Clara, and Swee San]

Being both Singapore and Malaysia residents before, I've tried many different types of curries and spices from Indian to Nyonya. But I'd like to try what "Sri Lankan Black Chicken Curry with Roasted Spices" would be like from your homepage.

My choice would be 'Chicken and scallops in yummy curry'. It's such a deliciously interesting combination and it can satisfy both meat lovers and seafood lovers all in one pot of curry! Personally for me, it's a winner coz I love chicken and I love scallops and I certainly love curry! Very pleasing spices and herbs being used too. A unique dish that I've never tried but will definitely want to!

Cooking curry has always been either chicken (most of the time), if not fish. Crab Panang Curry caught my eye ~ cooking thus version of curry would be simply awesome. We are so used to chilli crab, black pepper crab but curry?. This is a def try for me. Thank you!

I love this event! What a great way to show support against intolerance! As an Indian who grew up with parents who made aromatic curries everyday we were often blessed with neighbors showing up at our house, not to complain but rather to inquire as to what we were making and if they could please join us for dinner!
