To enjoy sambal belacan as a dip, calamansi lime juice is great to enhance the flavor but not a must. If you like some sourish fruity sweetness, tamarind might be a good substitute for lime juice. Otherwise, you can always add in some sugar, soy sauce or garlic, it will be just fine. Play along with the ingredients that suit you. The key ingredients are fresh chilies, garlic, shallots, tamarind juice and a dash of salt & sugar. Squeeze in lime juice when served.

To make your sambal more flavourful, you can also throw in thinly sliced lemongrass, tomatoes (without juice) or tiny bits of turmeric powder.

Enjoy!
ReeseSeasonWithSpicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13520070016888816645[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-488443880886773768.post-33578996202260563612011-05-31T05:30:41.665-07:002011-05-31T05:30:41.665-07:00would love to conjur up a good vegan sambal! will ...would love to conjur up a good vegan sambal! will bookmark this with my cookmarked.com account until i get the rest figure out!laura[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-488443880886773768.post-73878412047275856882011-05-28T04:06:09.755-07:002011-05-28T04:06:09.755-07:00Tes,

Then you can blend it with garlic, shallots and a bit of water. Feel feel to add some lemongrass.

Then fry the chili paste in a wok or pan with some oil. Add belacan & some tamarind juice and fry everything together until fragrant. The sambal is ready when the paste gets thicken. Add sugar, salt & some lime juice and enjoy!
